I'd like to get my kids (8 and 4) out ice fishing. Any suggestions where best to go for the first time? Ideally a hut and I'm guessing Perch so thatthey dont get bored. What should I bring? I've never been ice fishing myself either.

Thanks

I'm looking to rent a house/cabin for about a weekend or even during the week somewhere around Cooks Bays for some great perch fishing/white fish. I am planning on going ice fishing this upcoming February of 2010 with a group of 5+. Last year I rented out a house with 6 other guys and had a great experience. However, the guy that I usually rented out the house from doesn't rent it out anymore...If anyone has any great deals going on with house rentals for Cooks Bay or anyone know of anything please let me know asap. thanks

hey mobell67 i have one of those underwater camera and they are the best thing for ice fishing. there nothing better than knowing when to pull up on your line when you can't tell if a perch has hit it. as for debris i took my aqua vu to rice lake and used it there in heavy weeds and near rock beds and it held up just fine. no snags. the only thing i would recomend is that you get one in colour. i have one in Black and white and its somtimes hard to see if a fish is in the distance. other than that there well worth the investment.

Some people still seem to ask questions about smoking fish. You don't have to get very fancy.Prepare the fish by filleting and washing in cold water. Leave the skin on, the flesh will stay together much better, especially with whitefish as they are very soft sometimes.Prepare a brine by mixing 1 litre of water with half a cup of salt, and half a cup of sugar. Use kosher or coarse salt without iodine. For sugar I use demarara sugar, but you can use any kind.If you need more brine use multiples of this recipe.Use a glass casserole dish or similar container. Not metal. Brine the fish for about 1 hour for pieces about half an inch thick.Keep the pieces the same size as much as possible. Increase time for thicker pieces. After brining rinse the filets in cold water and dry with paper towels and put on drying rack for as long as it takes to get tacky (abt one hour or more). It helps to have a small fan to blow over the fish. Put fish in smoker for at least 3 hrs at abt 170 degrees fahrenheit. This is hot smoking. This fish will stay good in the fridge for about 8 to 10 days. Usually it is long gone by then anyway.I don't do cold smoking because it takes a week at least. I use a Centro smoking cabinet I purchased at Crappy Tire on sale for $200. I have tried all the fancy stuff like onion powder and garlick etc. It's much nicer with just salt and sugar.Perch does not smoke very well ,because it is not fatty enough, but rainbow, salmon and whitefish are wonderful. I use it for all my parties and when friends come over.Keep it simple and you'll enjoy it better. Janneman

I fished Cooks Bay for many years now and one year targeted Pike 4 days of the week out of Keswick. We did very well most days always landing at least a Pike each but never limited 5 fish is the most I did during 6 hours. My best set up is in 8-11 feet of water with a clear bottom with couple of weeds in the back ground. If you look into the hole you should be able to see straight down, as if in a aquarium. I always set up two poles one would be a tip up and a rod with a float. I run fire line on both I found out that when the bite is shy the fire line does not spoke the Pike as much as the mono does. I then attach a shiner I try using creek chub but if you can get a golden shiner they are very rare but worth their weight in gold. Hook the bait according to size I like 5-7 inches in bait the hook should be some where in the back between the dorsal and head make sure not to put the hook through the back bone. When the minnow is hooked it should teeter level and not leaning to a one side. Place the bait about 6 inches of the bottom and make sure you have a good size weight on the line so the minnow does not spook the Pike when it takes off, but brings the minnow back quickly to the Pike. Good luck!!

Greg, we were out the other weekend, and our best results came with simple dead sticking with a minnow.
